Memorial and Musuem Tour of Auschwitz- Birkenau

Submitted by Milton Reynolds

“Birkenau is where the Nazis erected most of the machinery of mass extermination in which they murdered approximately one million European Jews. At the same time, Birkenau was the largest concentration camp (with nearly 300 primitive barracks, most of them wooden). Over a hundred thousand prisoners were here in 1944: Jews, Poles, Roma, and others. The nearly 200 hectares of grounds include the ruins of the gas chambers and crematoria and places filled with human ashes. There are primitive prisoner barracks and kilometers of fences and roads.” -- Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum Website

Arrogance personified

Ubiquity of deceit

Strategically placed

Calculated in every possible way

Hellish beyond imagination

Wanton denigration and humiliation

Intention of full annihilation

Terrifyingly rational and logical

Zenith of a perverted ideology in the service of nation

In spite of the wealth of knowledge held within our group, none of us were prepared for the immensity and scale of Auschwitz.  One can read a library of books and view a gallery of images and be completely dumbstruck by the scope of this campus of destruction.
